They called earlier today saying they were M&T Bank, and updating account. Only I called M&T and they said no. I also called the number back and the lady answered as Ashley with M&T Bank.
I don't believe they are safe and they are good to answer like that. I am trying to find more info on them. Also have M&T watching my account.

I received a call from this number earlier today. I verified through M&T customer service that this is a valid number.

We called M&T and they verified they are collecting this information, and that is their number. But had I elected electronic messages, and there was no message in my account about this. if I had been thinking I would have asked for some kind of proof, preferably a message in my account, before giving out his information. It would be a highly effective scam!

I looked this up because I got a letter in the mail that had this number to call. The letter looked suspicious to me because it started with "Immediate attention required or your account(s) may be closed" just like phishing emails from identity thieves.

However, I went to my local M&T bank and they said they DID send this. They seemed to know about this letter and the required info. (It was the last 4 digits of SS#, drivers license info, DOB, etc..) You can go to (or call) your local office if you are concerned and they can take the information they need.

I think this was a stupid move on the bank's part. They could have proven their identity in the letter by referencing my account number and not making it sound like a ransom note.

I received a rather threatening letter (supposedly) from M&T Bank instructing me to call their toll free number to verify my information or they may close my account! I called the # (NOT planning on giving them ANY personal info) and was told by the woman who answered and her manager that M&T sent letters out to thousands of customers to verify their information in accordance with the US Patriot Act, and that if I was not comfortable giving them my information via phone, that I could stop in to my local branch, or call the # on the back of my Debit card. :\ At this point, I'm not sure what to think.... But it's NEVER a good idea to give ANY personal information out via phone to a number that you don't recognize. The first thing they asked me was for my card or account number!!! :( A bank (of all places) should recognize the idiocy of that; considering all the identity theft there is going on in the world!!
My advice: Go to your local M&T branch and talk to them directly!! Safety first! Identity theft is no joke.

I called the regular customer service number on the website.

They did send out a letter with the warning that Immediate attention is required or your account(s) may be closed.

I explained to them that the letter had scam written all over it because the phone numbers were not normal M&T numbers and the letter and envelope had the incorrect bank logo (the one on the letter is missing the reversed M graphic and words M & T Bank are in the incorrect font.

I asked if I could handle this at the local branch and was told I could.

I had called the number on the letter and got suspicious when they asked for the first five digits of my social security number. M&T should not be verifying identities withe the first five digits because everyone else asks for the last 4 digits so if by chance your information was compromised, it wouldn't be too hard to put the two sets of numbers together to make a complete SSN#

THIS MOST DEFINITELY IS A SCAM AND THE SCAMMERS ARE POSTING HERE. I AM GOING TO MY BRANCH AS SOON AS THEY OPEN AND CLOSING OUR ACCOUNTS. HERE'S WHY I AM CERTAIN:
FROM MY HUSBAND, THEY GOT HIS NAME, FULL SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER, DATE OF BIRTH, AND EMPLOYER. NO ONE ASKS FOR ALL THAT STUFF UNLESS THEY ARE SCAMMERS. THERE IS A SPECIAL PLACE IN HELL FOR THOSE DOING THIS, AND EVEN HOTTER FOR THOSE POSTING THE COMMENTS ABOVE THAT THIS IS SAFE.

I don't care what anyone says, I'm not falling for this. What additional info could they possibly need? There is one other issue as to why this looks to be a scam, but I am not going to mention it for fear that the scammers will add it to their bait.

I called the number on the letter and realized as I was talking to the lady that is probably a phishing scam. We have recently moved so I had assumed this request was connected with our address change.

I called M&T's regular number (from their website) and they confirmed that they had sent the letter. (I knew it was their web site as I had to go through an automated system that gave me my balance.) My new address was on the web site also after I logged in also.

M&T is stupid. They ask for the first 5 digits of my SS number. They ask for personal information over the phone that nobody should be expected to give. And they send what is basically a threatening letter.

One last comment. MY CREDIT RECORDS ARE FROZEN. When sh*t like this happens, I am glad I did that.

I put the number in M&T's search bar, took me to a page on their secure web site that verified that it is a valid M&T number in Buffalo. Call your branch if that leaves you wondering.

My 86 year old mom received a phone call from a Mrs. Ford at an M&T Banking branch. She verified my mother's name, address, date of birth. She also knew my mom's social security number and verified it with her. Then she told my mother she needed her driver's license number. My mom said that she didn't know it. Therefore, Mrs. Ford gave my mom the phone# 1-866-281-9451 to call or Mrs. Ford told my mom to go to her local M&T branch. I was listening in on this phone call to make sure the person wasn't a scammer. But Mrs. Ford already had my mother's information and was just verifying it with her. Therefore, I looked up the number that Mrs. Ford called us on and the phone# was a local M&T banking branch in our area. Then I looked up the phone#, 1-866-281-9451, that Mrs. Ford told my mother to call with her driver's license number. The 1-866-281-9451 number is legitimate.

I was skeptical about calling the number listed on the letter that I received because it did indeed seem to be a phishing scam. However, when I logged into my M & T account and clicked the "privacy" link at the bottom of the screen, which took me to their privacy policy page. At the bottom of that page is the "contact" link, which I clicked on. When you scroll down to the bottom of that page, there is an "update your information" link. Once you click on that link, they talk about you may have received a letter in the mail asking you to call and update your information. M & T did send this letter requesting customers to update their information. Although I do agree with many other posters on this page, that the bank could have done a little better with the way the letter was addressed, especially with so much identity theft going on. And they could have posted something on the main home screen instead of 3-4 clicks away.
