Got a call from a guy who I could barely understand, identified himself as "working for Aetna" and wanted to "verify my insurance coverage." Of course, I don't give my information over the telephone on calls I do not initiate, so my scam radar went up. I called the number back and was able to determine that he is with Xerox Recovery Services, working on behalf of Aetna, and his reason for calling could have been for 1 of 2 things: coordination of benefits (when you have two types of insurance and they're trying to determine whether one should pay first or the other), or for subrogation services (when they have already determined that - in this case Aetna - should not have paid a claim and some other entity is responsible for it) so they can get information from you to recover the money from that other entity.

I called Aetna and was able to verify that they do have an agreement for these services with Xerox, so it was legit, but a few lingering questions remain:

1) On what planet is it ok to call people and misrepresent who you are and why you are calling?
2) Who, in their right mind in this day and age of scammers everywhere, thinks it is a good idea to call people out of the blue on their cell phones and ask them personal questions about their health insurance? Does anyone fall for that and not think it is a scam?? Xerox really needs to rethink its methods. I am seriously creeped out by this.
3) What claim triggered this inquiry? I checked, and our claims listing doesn't show anything out of the ordinary or something that would have triggered a flag (like a recent car accident, or a change in employment with new insurance). Xerox couldn't give me an answer to that and, get this, Aetna couldn't get one, either. It turns out that the reps at Xerox won't give any information to the Aetna reps, who work for the company that hired them! How screwed up is that?
4) Has someone used our insurance information to log a claim (identity theft) for some kind of accident they had? Do I need to be concerned about and watch for that now?
5) How concerned do I need to be that Aetna provided Xerox with our information without our knowledge? Will these knuckleheads keep calling me now that they have a good number? Creepy.
